Multimedia & Invention

I once read that "in a sense, multimedia is truly an invention". What do you suppose is meant by that statement and how does it relate to the area of design for the design graphics engineering student?

Because multimedia is so wide in defenition someone can take one aspect of it and create something else then that could create five other things and so on. In the DGET field you'll find people that can take something and create something new out of it to help, inspire, or to create something totally out of the ordianry for work, or others. Working with various forms of multimedia programs allows us to take our ideas and start to see them come life.

Multimedia was created by inventors to me. It all had to start somewhere and most likely with some one dreaming it up. Asking them selves what would make there lives easier. Basically they actually had to use there imaginations in order to make some of these awesome programs. I believe John is correct, as DGET students we tend to use our imagination with the software, and invent our own models, and tools to help us, and building upon things that have already been done.

I agree that multimedia was created by inventors. I think one of the biggest advocators of the field is plain technology. Without the revolution of computer technology the so-called multimedia as we think of it today could simply not be here. I think most everything dealing with multimedia today has some kind of processor to it. Let’s take the Ipod for example, it is a way to view or listen to many different forms of media, and with its computing power and advanced technology we can fit a lot into our pockets now-a-days. Multimedia relates to the DGET student through the technology that exists now in the way we invent things. In the architectural field 50 years ago they drew houses with a pencil and everything was by hand. I don’t think that was multimedia. We do things now with ArchiCAD or Revit that would have staggered someone’s mind 50 years ago. In this way multimedia came hand in hand with technology and multimedia itself has been the invention forgetting for a second that every thing around us has also been designed and invented on the invention of multimedia. An invention is something no one has thought of before, and everything dealing with multimedia today is certainly revolutionary and it will keep on getting better and better.

I agree with the comments made, but I also think it is as simple as the fact that using multimedia is the process of inventing. The combinations and ideas used in the creation of multimedia are truly original. Even a simple thirty second television commercial contains so much creativity and a new way of looking at things, just check out the super bowl commercials! One of Webster’s definitions for invention is: a product of the imagination. I think the creation of multimedia is an invention in its own way.

Multimedia really is an invention in my mind. We really don't know how or when it was started, but it is something that has evolved over the many years with each generation. It has continously changed into different forms, from newspapers and magazines, to what we know now as the internet. Which has made the use of multimedia virtually unlimited in its use. As a DGET student, this has opened the door to so many possibilites. When we are working on projects, we can share this information through the use of different programs or websites. Like Levi mentioned, using pencil and paper to draw plans or sketches took along time and now can sit at a computer and draw everything you need right there. Drawing up 3-D models of houses/buildings and various mechanical parts has created a whole new way to look at the world through the use of mulitmedia in the Engineering field.

multimedia is a form used for the invention of things such as projects ideas, presentations, and imagination to create something new. You invent something and use multimedia to advertise, present and show to others. Every time you use multimedia to create something on your own, you are creating new inventions
